As the eye matures, two conditions – presbyopia and cataracts – can cause a decreased quality of vision. Presbyopia is the inability of the eye to accommodate or focus on near objects. This occurs because the eye’s natural lens becomes thicker and less flexible over time. The loss of flexibility prevents the lens from moving forward in the eye to focus on near objects. Cataract is a clouding of the lens that prevents light from focusing clearly on the retina (the light sensitive part of the eye). Both of these conditions can be treated in one step with the ReStor Intraocular Lens (IOL).
In the past, patients undergoing cataract procedures had only one option: a standard, single-focus IOL. The standard IOL provides good distance vision, but glasses are required for near vision – like reading. The ReStor IOL offers a revolutionary alternative to patients wanting to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses caused by cataract and/or presbyopia.
The ReStor IOL is a multi-focal lens designed with a center optic to provide near vision. In concentric circles around the center of the lens (like a bull’s eye) the properties of the optics change to provide different “zones of vision.” The microscopic steps from “zone” to “zone” are 300 times thinner than a human hair and 35 times thinner than a red blood cell. Now, with new aspheric technology, the ReStor IOL provides vision at an even higher resolution. As a result, recipients of the ReStor IOL not only receive quality near and distance vision, but they also experience lower incidence of glare or halo.
The ReStor IOL is Medicare approved. However, as a Premium Lens, the ReStor IOL is not fully covered by Medicare. New guidelines from Medicare allow the patient to choose to pay for the non-covered services and gain the benefits from a decreased dependence on glasses for all ranges of vision. Eye Health Partners offers payment options to help make premium lenses like the ReStor IOL more affordable.
Cataract surgery is among the most commonly performed procedures in the United States. The procedure is performed in an outpatient surgery facility under local anesthesia and can be completed within a matter of minutes. However, it is important to understand that with any medical procedure there may be unforeseen complications and that outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Even with our best efforts, some patients may still require minimal prescription correction to sharpen their vision.
At Eye Health Partners, patient care is of utmost concern to our surgeons and staff. We realize that choosing the right IOL will have significant impact on your vision. Our experienced surgeons will discuss your lifestyle and vision needs to help determine which treatment is the best for you.
The more information we have about you and your preferences, the better we can counsel you on care. The Vision Preferences Questionnaire is one tool we use in conjunction with a thorough examination and advanced diagnostic testing to provide a customized vision correction treatment.
